Stephen Timms calls for industry to recruit young people for major projects

Construction minister Stephen Timms has said it is 鈥渧ital鈥 for the industry to recruit young people for major projects like the Olympics and Crossrail.

At a ceremony held for young people from the first wave of Construction and the Built Environment GCSE as part of National Construction Week, he said the upcoming projects were central for the economy and public services.

He said: 鈥淚t is vital that we recruit, and train the people we need to complete these great projects.

鈥淭he industry relies on a whole range of professions and skills, and we need high quality vocational education, alongside more academic routes, for our business to be successful, and everyone to achieve their aspirations.

鈥淪tep 1 has to be to encourage the best students, with ability and aptitude, to choose a career in construction.鈥

The GCSE has been piloted at 100 schools across England and Wales.
