England's oldest working theatre, the Theatre Royal in Richmond, North Yorkshire, has been restored at a cost of 拢1.5m. The original Georgian auditorium, built in 1788, has been redecorated to appear as it did two centuries ago.

The redesign was by Allen Tod Architecture of Leeds, the refurbishment by contractor Walter Thompson of Northallerton, with Turner & Townsend as project manager. Theatre Projects acted as consultant, Symonds Group as structural engineer, Buro Happold as services engineer and Turner & Holman as quantity surveyor.
