Firm awarded upgrade contract for Australia鈥檚 largest railway hub
Laing O鈥橰ourke, which earlier this week said it had narrowed losses at the business last year, has been awarded the AUS$955m (拢537m) contract to work on the upgrade of Australia鈥檚 biggest railway hub, Central Station.
The project for the Sydney Metro City & Southwest has been designed by architects John McAslan + Partners, who designed the King鈥檚 Cross station extension in London, and Australian firm Woods Bagot.
The station revamp is part of a wider AU$20bn (拢11bn) Sydney Metro project, Australia鈥檚 biggest public transport infrastructure scheme.
The Central Station metro upgrade includes the main concourse, northern concourse and metro box platforms.
Central Station sees more than 250,000 people passing through every day, with passenger numbers expected to grow to 450,000 a day in the next 20 years.
Pre-tax losses at Laing O鈥橰ourke in the year to March 2017 fell to 拢67m from 拢246m on revenue up to 拢3.2bn from 拢2.5bn.
